MARIMARI Film Project & Safe House Update - September 2025

Since the release of the feature film MARIMARI 12 months ago at the Whānau Mārama: New Zealand International Film Festival, the film has gone on to screen at a number of international film festivals and events including in Hawaii, Tahiti, Canberra Australia, Bristol UK, Port Moresby, and Madang in Papua New Guinea, Los Angeles USA, and shortly in Macedonia and New Caledonia.
In late 2024, the Bishop of Goroka provided Evelyn Kunda, the subject and co-creator of the MARIMARI film, with a small house to support her work caring for sorcery accusation related survivors. The house is a very basic dwelling that needs both refurbishment and extension to operate as a Safe House for SARV survivors. The house sits within the Kefamo Mission Station just outside of Goroka. The location provides a more secure area for Evelyn to support the young women that she is currently looking after. While in Goroka in May this year, Paul was able to help oversee the installation of a new water tank for the Safe House. With the support of a generous donor from New Zealand, the Safe House now has clean and reliable water supply.
With the generosity and support of people like yourselves, who helped us raise donations, we will be able to help refurbish and extend the Kefamo Mission Station Safe House over the next 12 months. See Evelyn discussing her plans for the safe house here (and make sure you turn subtitles on for English).
As you know, we are still working towards our goal of $80,000 NZD for Evelyn, and every donation will go towards these efforts. MARIMARI is available for private community screenings or private online access, please reach out to us if you would like to organise or host one of these screenings with your local community.
Thanks for supporting the Safe House and Evelyn Kunda’s work.
